ALS2 Recertification: Who Is Eligible and What the Refresher Involves

An ALS2 credential lasts four years. If yours is coming up for renewal, you do not need to repeat the full course. ALS2 recertification is a shorter refresher for clinicians who already hold a current ALS2, with a four hour training session and a significantly reduced fee.

What ALS2 recertification is

ALS2 recertification renews your Advanced Life Support Level 2 credential. It follows the same blended model as the full course: eLearning at home first, then an in person session for training and assessment. Because you have done ALS2 before, the in person part is four hours rather than a full day.

Recertification is available for ALS2 only. There is no recertification pathway for ALS1; an ALS1 credential is renewed by completing ALS1 again.

Who is eligible

You are eligible for ALS2 recertification if you have completed an ALS2 course within the last four years with either:

  • Resuscitation Australia, or

  • the Australian Resuscitation Council

You will need proof of current certification at the time of booking. When you book, you upload a copy of your current ALS2 credential.

If your ALS2 has already lapsed, recertification is not available and you will need to complete the full ALS2 course.

What the refresher involves

  1. eLearning. Complete the eLearning modules at home before your session, including five compulsory short quizzes embedded in the eLearning. They refresh the theory: the ALS algorithm, rhythm recognition and the reversible causes of arrest.

  2. Four hours of training and assessment. The session runs from 10am to 2pm in a small group of up to six. It focuses on hands on skills, team leadership and simulated scenarios.

  3. A renewed credential. On successful completion, your ALS2 is renewed for another four years.

How recertification compares with the full ALS2 course

  • Who it is for: full ALS2 is for clinicians new to ALS2; recertification is for current ALS2 holders (within 4 years).

  • Face to face time: full ALS2 is one full day, 8am to 5pm; recertification is four hours, 10am to 2pm.

  • Fee: full ALS2 $1,495; recertification $1,095.

  • Proof required: none for the full course; a current ALS2 credential for recertification.

When to book

Book before your credential lapses, not after. If your ALS2 expires before your session, you lose eligibility for recertification and need the full course.

An honest note: recertification groups are small, capped at six, and they fill. If your renewal falls near a deadline set by your employer or college, give yourself a margin of a month or two rather than booking the last session before your expiry date.

Why recertify rather than let it lapse

  • It keeps your role requirements current. Many critical care, emergency and anaesthetic roles require a current ALS2.

  • It counts towards CPD. The training time can be claimed as CPD.

  • It is far shorter than starting again. Four hours in person instead of a full day.

  • Skills fade. Resuscitation is a skill most clinicians use rarely. A structured refresher every four years keeps team leadership and the algorithm sharp.

Where recertification runs

EMRT delivers ALS2 recertification regionally, in the same locations as its other courses. See the ALS2 recertification page for details and the course calendar for the next dates.
