Regional ALS Training: Save Time and Funds by Training Locally
For many clinicians outside the major cities, gaining or renewing an Advanced Life Support credential has meant time off work, a long drive and nights away from home. EMRT takes a different approach: regional delivery. We bring Resuscitation Australia accredited ALS training to regional communities, so you can train close to where you live and work. Save time and funds by training locally. More time with your family and patients.
Why regional delivery matters
Travel is the hidden cost of an ALS course. Once the drive, accommodation, fuel and cover for your shifts are counted, a course far from home can take several days out of your roster.
One of our current candidates put it this way:
"I have to do ALS2 as part of my post fellowship ongoing CPD requirements, and I came across this newer format of ALS2 done by EMRT which is different to the usual 2 day course that used to be the standard. This newer format is definitely easier to manage logistically in terms of time off work. I live in Wagga so a 2 day course means I have to be off work for 4 days due to travel involved. The new, blended model delivered locally means I only have to take one day off work."
That is the case for regional ALS training in one paragraph: the same accredited credential, with less time away from the people who depend on you.
Where EMRT delivers ALS courses
EMRT delivers ALS1, ALS2 and ALS2 Recertification across regional NSW and the ACT, and the list of locations keeps growing. Current locations include:
Wollongong, for the Illawarra and South Coast
Nowra, for the Shoalhaven
Batemans Bay, for the Eurobodalla
Bega, for the Bega Valley and Sapphire Coast
Cooma, for the Snowy Monaro
Canberra, for the ACT and surrounding NSW
Wagga Wagga, for the Riverina
Griffith, for the Western Riverina
Dates change as courses fill, so we keep them in one place: the EMRT course calendar always shows what is open, in date order.
Which course do you need?
The three courses build on each other.
ALS1 is for clinicians who need to recognise and manage the deteriorating patient and work as an effective member of the cardiac arrest team. It is a common requirement for clinical roles and placements.
ALS2 is for clinicians who lead the resuscitation until advanced support arrives. It adds team leadership and special circumstances, including causes of arrest in perioperative and post surgical settings.
ALS2 Recertification is for clinicians who already hold a current ALS2 and need to renew it.
The simplest way to tell them apart: ALS1 prepares you to work as a team member, ALS2 prepares you to act as the team leader. Read more on the ALS1 course page.
How the blended format cuts time off work
Every EMRT course follows the Resuscitation Australia blended model. You complete the eLearning and its short quizzes at home, at your own pace, before the training day. The face to face session then concentrates on what can only be learned in a room: hands on skills with resuscitation equipment, simulated scenarios and working as a team.
That is why the training sessions are shorter:
ALS1: four hours, in a morning or afternoon session
ALS2: one full day
ALS2 Recertification: four hours
Small groups, close to home
Groups are capped at six candidates. In a small group you spend more of the session hands on and less of it watching, and the instructor can shape the scenarios to the setting you work in, whether that is a rural emergency department, a ward or a retrieval role.
An honest note: a small group also means places run out. If your credential is due, book well ahead rather than waiting for the last session before it lapses.
What you need to do before the training day
Book your date and complete the short booking form
Work through the eLearning modules and quizzes at home before the day
For ALS2 Recertification, have a copy of your current ALS2 credential ready to upload when you book
Plan to arrive on time: assessment runs continuously across the session
Accreditation and guidelines
EMRT courses are accredited by Resuscitation Australia and align with the ANZCOR guidelines, the resuscitation guidelines used across Australia and New Zealand. Your ALS credential is valid for four years, and the eLearning stays available to you for refreshers in that time. The training time counts towards your CPD.
Frequently asked questions
Where does EMRT deliver ALS training?
EMRT delivers accredited ALS1, ALS2 and ALS2 Recertification courses regionally, currently across regional NSW and the ACT, from the coast to the Riverina and the Central West. The eLearning is done at home, so the only travel is to your nearest training location.
How long is the ALS training session?
ALS1 is a four hour session, run in the morning or afternoon. ALS2 is one full day and ALS2 Recertification is four hours. The theory is covered in eLearning before the day, so the face to face time is spent on hands on skills, scenarios and assessment rather than lectures.
Is regional ALS training the same credential as a city course?
Yes. The course is accredited by Resuscitation Australia and the credential is the same wherever you train. What changes is the format: a blended course with eLearning first and a shorter in person session.
What if none of the dates suit me?
Check the course calendar, as new dates are added regularly and a nearby location may suit. If you have a group of colleagues, EMRT can also run a private course at a time and place that suits your team.
